LOS ANGELES: TikTok is encouraging creators to share horizontal videos that exceed one minute, offering increased visibility within 72 hours of posting. This incentive is available to creators active on TikTok for over three months, excluding advertisements or political content. Although TikTok users traditionally favor vertical videos, promoting horizontal content requires viewers to adjust their orientation, similar to YouTube’s format.
This shift towards YouTube-like features on TikTok has been ongoing, with the platform experimenting with longer video formats, including 30-minute videos. While YouTube often features longer content for monetization purposes, TikTok has been known for its shorter, bite-sized videos.
This move is not the first time TikTok has encouraged content resembling that of YouTube. The Series paywall program allows users to curate collections of videos up to 20 minutes long for subscribers willing to pay, with creators setting prices from $1 to $190 for their series.
As TikTok leans towards horizontal videos and longer content, creators may repurpose material from YouTube, where compensation is generally more favorable, particularly with YouTube Shorts. Cross-platform content sharing is already common, and YouTube has been incorporating features to emulate the TikTok experience, suggesting a convergence between the two platforms.
