ISLAMABAD: In a significant development, political parties formerly part of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) announced their reunion to establish a coalition government in Pakistan’s center following the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) finally announced the complete results of the 2024 general elections.
During a joint press conference in Islamabad, PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari, alongside leaders from MQM-P, PML-Q, PML-N, IPP, and BAP, unveiled this decision. Zardari underscored the urgency for political leaders to join forces and confront the nation’s challenges collectively, stressing, “We will navigate Pakistan out of its difficulties.”
Highlighting the significance of reconciliation and inclusivity in the political landscape, Zardari emphasized that electoral opposition should not hinder collaboration for the country’s greater good. He called for shared agendas in economic and defense matters, inviting all political factions, including the incumbent PTI, to engage in constructive dialogue and cooperation.
Endorsing the coalition, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif extended gratitude to Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto for their party’s support. He emphasized prioritizing solutions to the country’s economic woes, asserting the necessity for political unity to effectively address Pakistan’s challenges. Shehbaz also extended an invitation to promote the Charter of Democracy, urging a collective effort to mend past grievances.
Furthermore, Shehbaz announced PML-N’s candidate for Punjab Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz, following party consultations. He urged his brother, Nawaz Sharif, to accept the position of Prime Minister, signaling a unified front within the party.
Other political leaders, including Aleem Khan from the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP) and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui from MQM-Pakistan, pledged their support for coalition efforts. Emphasizing the paramount importance of national interests, Siddiqui stressed mutual cooperation to fortify democracy and bolster Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership.
Amidst Pakistan’s challenging phase characterized by inflation and economic crisis, Aleem Khan emphasized the imperative for tough yet beneficial decisions for the country’s welfare.
The commitment to serving Pakistan’s interests above all else resonated further as Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui reiterated the necessity for a collective approach to navigate the nation through its current challenges.
