A man allegedly involved in firing at Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s residence found dead n the police lock-up at the Mumbai Police headquarters.
According to reports from Indian media outlets, 32-year-old Anuj Thapan was discovered deceased in the police lock-up at the Mumbai Police headquarters, later pronounced dead at GT Hospital. The incident took place around 11 am, with Thapan allegedly taking his own life in the lock-up’s restroom.
Police sources have disclosed that while two other accused individuals were providing statements, Thapan was among 10 others in the cell. The motive behind the suicide remains unclear.
Thapan was apprehended by the Mumbai Crime Branch last week in Punjab, suspected of involvement in procuring firearms for the individuals responsible for firing shots outside Salman Khan’s residence on April 14.
In addition to Thapan, three other suspects, including Sagar Pal and Vicky Gupta, believed to have been on the motorbike from which the shots were fired, have been arrested. The third suspect, Sonu Bishnoi, is presently in judicial custody due to health issues.
This incident has raised significant concerns regarding security protocols and the efficacy of the ongoing police investigation. The Mumbai police have been conducting inquiries into the matter under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) due to potential ties with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. As inquiries persist, questions have emerged regarding the circumstances surrounding Thapan’s suicide and the preventive measures implemented within police custody.
An accidental death report has been filed, further complicating the legal proceedings under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
The GT Hospital, where Thapan was transported, has become a focal point of the investigation into this unfortunate incident within Mumbai police custody.
