KARACHI: In a brazen display of criminal sophistication, a gang of car lifters in Karachi has been using advanced signal jammers to bypass vehicle security systems, leaving both owners and law enforcement helpless. The latest incident occurred in the upscale Defense Phase 8 area, where thieves made off with a high-value Toyota Corolla without triggering its alarm or tracker.

The victim, Tariq Hussain, had parked his gray Toyota Corolla GLi (2018 model) outside his residence on Khayaban-e-Ghalib, Street No. 12. On the first night of Eid-ul-Adha, around 3 AM, thieves disabled the car’s security system using a jammer and drove away undetected. What makes the theft particularly concerning is that the vehicle’s tracker continued to show its location at the original spot, rendering the anti-theft technology useless.

This incident is not an isolated one. Over the past months, Karachi has seen a rise in vehicle thefts involving similar methods, raising questions about the effectiveness of current security measures. While trackers and alarms were once considered reliable deterrents, criminals appear to have adapted, using technology that neutralizes these safeguards.

Police have registered a case (FIR No. 136/2025 under Section 381-A) and handed the investigation to the Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) of Clifton Division. However, as of now, no significant breakthroughs have been reported.

The growing use of jamming devices in such crimes points to a troubling trend. Experts suggest that these tools, which were once restricted to military and law enforcement use, may now be circulating in the black market. This raises concerns not just about car thefts but also about the potential misuse of such technology in other crimes.

For now, citizens like Tariq Hussain are left waiting for answers, while the broader question remains: As thieves grow more technologically advanced, what steps will authorities take to stay ahead?
